Last night at work, our Point of Sales System CRASHED….EEEK. Right in the middle of dinner rush, happy hour rush and I was about to get a private party of twenty. This sent all the servers, managers, bartender and chefs in a minor frenzy.
If you aren’t familiar with a POS system, it is how the servers ring in all the food and beverages to be made and these tickets go to the various locations in the restaurant so the chefs or bartenders can prepare the items you have just put into the system. It is also calculates the ticket for the table, and enables the server to run the guests credit card on the spot.
I have worked at the restaurant for 26 years now and in this time frame I can honestly say that the system has only gone down once before and that was a very long time ago. We have been very fortunate. So as the MOD is frantically running around trying to decipher the issue, the servers are hand writing every order from the table and disbursing it to the correct part of the restaurant. Of course this causes somewhat of an issue as some people cannot write legibly others forget key things such as steak temperature etc. .. minor-okay major cursing happening in the kitchen. Using the manual credit card machine was a bit of a problem as well, since not all credit cards have raised numbers, the numbers are encrypted into the magnetic card. So handwriting credit card numbers in etc.
After I got home, and was trying to unwind and started thinking about how reliant on computers, telephones, point of sales systems etc. It is sort of sad when such chaos ensues when a device goes down. It is sad that so many people are impatient and not understanding of the situation at hand.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SIMPLER TIMES~OR WERE THEY SIMPLER?
Times were simpler, indeed! But what a nightmare for you!
It was a good wake up call to engage the brain. Thank you for stopping by….
